Flossie Minnie Austin, 93, Chanute, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at the Heritage Health Care Center in Chanute.
She was born on Jan. 16, 1910, near Fargo, Okla., the daughter of Odes Herman and Hazel D. Hayworth Erwin.
Her family moved to Greenwood County when she was a small child. She graduated from Madison High School in 1929.
She moved to the Wichita area in the 1940s, where her husband worked in the defense plants. They moved to the Chanute area in 1951 to farm for a few years, before returning to Wichita. They resided there until the mid-1960s, when they returned to Chanute to retire.
She was a homemaker and attended First United Methodist Church in Chanute and High Prairie United Methodist Church.
On Aug. 7, 1929, she married Oran L. Austin in Eureka. He died Nov. 13, 1979.
Survivors include one son, Stephen Austin, Burlington; three daughters, Joanne Hutchinson, Altoona, Donna Kepley, Newton, and Doris Anton, Wichita; four grandchildren, Toni, Joe, Ted and Brenda, who were raised by the Austins after the death of their son and his wife; two brothers, Odes Erwin, Fresno, Calif., and Donald Erwin, Lake Isabella, Calif.; two sisters, Mary Plog, Lodi, Calif., and Helen Campbell, Hemet, Calif.; 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jimmie Austin; a daughter, Barbara Jean Austin; a sister, Goldie Cummins; and two brothers, Raymond and Clifford Erwin.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, June 9, at High Prairie United Methodist Church, led by the Rev. Larry Jordan. Burial will follow at High Prairie Cemetery.
