Mar. 24, 1914 - June 24, 2010

Dr. Sidney K. "Doc" Back, 96, of Barbourville, passed away Thursday afternoon, June 24, 2010 in the Hospice Care Center in Lexington. He was a son of the late William Martin and Mary Goddard Back born on March 24, 1914 in Wayne County.

Doc Back was a Doctor of Chiropractics, owner of the former Back's Florist and an avid golfer. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Barbourville where he served as an Elder Emeritus and former Sunday School Superintendent. He faithfully served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a 50 year member of the Mountain Lodge 187 F&AM, 20 year member of the Selective Service Board, 50 year member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a 50 year member of the American Legion.

On February 15, 1941, he united in marriage with Jewel McDonald who preceded him in death. Later on November 4, 1963, he united in marriage with Elsie Sowders Young.

He was preceded in death by two sisters-Alta Lusk and Lucy Breeding and two brothers-Jack and Tom Back.

Survivors include his wife-Elsie Back of Barbourville; three children-Oberia Back of Louisville, Sheila Rice and husband, Gary, of Corbin and Tammara Garvey and husband, Brett, of Louisville; a stepson-Randell Young and wife, Judy, of Barbourville; a sister-Laura Ford of Louisville; a brother-Joe Back of Monticello; four grandchildren-Tanya Sawyers and husband, Rick, Tara Morgan and husband, Kevin, and son, Colten, Matthew Sidney Garvy and Andrew S. Garvey; three step grandsons-Jamey Young and wife, Angie, Mark Young and Casey Young; four step great-grandchildren; among other loved ones and dear friends.

His funeral service was conducted in the funeral home chapel Saturday, June 26 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Michael Medlock officiating. Burial was in the Elk Spring Cemetery. Casket bearers was be nephews.
