Born to John and Theresa Monahan in San Francisco, CA on 22 Oct 1918, Jack grew up in depression era Los Angeles, CA. After graduating from UCLA with a degree in English in 1939, he went to work for Lockheed as a machinist. When America was attacked in 1941, he enlisted in the US Army, and returned to the Philippines with MacArthur as a corpsman.
After the war, Jack took a job in public relations with Citizens Bank of Los Angeles. He spent most of his career as an advertising executive. In this capacity, he helped launch the careers of two of America's most famous musical acts of the 20th century. In LA, he promoted Liberace, the pianist, who became famous after the Citizen's campaign.
After the merger of Citizen's and Crocker, he helped launch the career of the Carpenters, whose keynote song "We've Only Just Begun", was supervised by Jack as a major bank promotion on radio and TV. While Jack held letters in language, it was his life-long love of music that made his career possible.
After retiring from the bank, Jack returned to his blue collar roots and opened a lock-smithing business in the South Bay area.
Twenty-two years later, he retired and moved to Ridgecrest, CA to care for his wife Liliane, who was confined to a nursing home. His devotion to Liliane is how many Ridgecrest residents will remember Jack.
John Monahan is survived by his step-daughter Michele Martorell; and his nephews John, Stephen and Phillip Monahan, along with many cousins.
