Mother of O. M. Gillaspy, Who Died in California, Was Buried on Bee Ridge

Mrs. Rosa Shriver, 82 years old, mother of O. M. Gillaspy of Edina, died at 11:30 o'clock Friday night, March 28, 1958, at a hospital in San Diego, Calif. Mrs. Shriver, a native Knox Countian, had been living in Santa Ana, Calif., for the last twenty years. She was seriously ill a month before death came.

The body arrived at Baring Tuesday morning and was brought to the Hudson Funeral Home in Edina. Services at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon were conducted at the Bee Ridge Church southeast of here by the Rev. Custer Vaughn. Burial was in the Bee Ridge Cemetery.

Two daughters survive besides Orion McKay Gillaspy of Edina. They are Mrs. Evangeline Gillaspy Beck of San Diego, Calif., and Ruth, Mrs. Jack Gromwell, of Westfield, N. J. Five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.

Mrs. Shriver was a daughter of Alexander and Phoebe McKay. She was born June 28, 1875, on a farm near Knox City, where she grew to young womanhood. She attended the State Teachers College at Kirksville, then taught in the rural schools of Knox County and in La Plata, where she met and married James Dudley Gillaspy, a young merchant in La Plata, Sept. 1, 1897. They moved to a farm near Atlanta, where their three children were born. In 1907 they bought the farm on Bee Ridge that was to be their home until 1919.

During the college years for their family they lived in Columbia until the time of Mr. Gillaspy's death Sept. 10, 1930. After his death she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Beck, in San Diego until her marriage to George E. Shriver of Santa Ana in 1939.

Her home continued to be in Santa Ana, after his death, until two years ago when failing health made it necessary for her to be with Mrs. Beck in San Diego.

During her lifetime she was active in church work; a member of the First Presbyterian Church of San Diego and a member of the Santa Ana Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
