John Milton Shreve traveled to Texas in August, 1835. Mr. Shreve's first home in Texas was in Velasco, and this is where he met and married his first wife, Ms. Sarah Bailey in August, 1836.

Prior to his marriage, John participated in the Battle of San Jacinto , as a member of Captain William S. Fisher's Company. He later received a total of 960 acres of land, from the Republic of Texas for his participation at San Jacinto and tour of military service. For a period of time John Shreve was the chief clerk of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Texas.

Mrs. Shreve died in June, 1838, and John was living in Travis County October 11, 1840 when he sold (a Certificate for)320 acres of his land. This may have been in preparation for his return home to Kentucky. Mr. Shreve took a second wife, Susan Lucket Simpson of Owen County, Kentucky, on June 22, 1843. Susan Shreve was born February 27, 1820 and died March 23, 1885. Children of John and Mrs. Susan Shreve were, Juliette Ann, William and Leven Fannin and James Simpson Shreve. William and Leven Fannin Shreve died in infancy.
