Betty W. Phelps, 79, passed away April 16, 2002, in a Jacksonville hospital. She was a native of Cambria, Pa., and formerly of Norfolk. She was a retired secretary in transportation with CSX railroad and a member of Lakewood United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Phelps is survived by her husband of 55 years, Bernard A. Phelps; a daughter, Carol Napier and husband Morris of Jacksonville; two sons, Bernard Phelps Jr. and wife Alice of Jacksonville and Michael A. Phelps and wife Beth of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Harry M. Wilkerson Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Abreu; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Col. Dennis A. Phelps.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Phyllis Earley officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the charity of one's choice. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com
