He was born in New Brunswick and lived in Somerville for 44 years before moving to Bridgewater 40 years ago.
Mr. Alpaugh was employed for 49 years as a signal maintainer for the Central Railroad of New Jersey before retiring in 1968.
He was a member of the Bradley Gardens Reformed Church.
Surviving are his wife Mabel Hendershot Alpaugh, a son Thomas of Manville; three daughters, Florence Martin of Bridgewater, Evelyn Hardgrove of Florida, and Marie Esposito of East Stroudsburg, PA; 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services were Saturday at Hannon Brothers Funeral Home. Raritan, followed by burial in New Cemetery in Somerville.
