James was a shoemaker and at one time a postmaster in Leeds. He served as substitute for his father Thomas Mitchell in War of 1812.

He first married Julia Gilbert (Oct 25, 1800 - Feb, 1831) on November 30, 1820 in Leeds, Maine. Julia was the mother of James' five children: Clara Mary, Ellen Lemont, Henry Gilbert, Julia, and James Everett.
