Walter R. Klapperich, 68, well known retired jeweler and prominent resident of the community died at the Ontonagon Memorial Hospital where he had been admitted Monday.

He had apparently made a good recovery following amputation of the left leg on March 6 and had been most active this summer.

He was born at Wausau, Wisconsin 9/15/1892 and learned the jewelry business before coming here as a young man about 46 years ago.

He was employed by Harris Levine and later purchased a half interest in Levine Jewelry Stores. In 1938 Mr. Levine retired and sold his interest to Mr. Klapperich.

About 10 years ago Mr. Klapperich formed a partnership with Wallace Kempen & the store operated as Klapperich & Kempen until the retirement of Mr. Klapperich 3 years ago.

On June 2, 1916 Mr. Klapperich was united in marriage to the former Ethel Lockerby of Ontonagon. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and had always been active in civic affairs. He was an ardent hunter & fisherman & also played baseball & basketball, was manager of the Blue Devils Basketball Team from 1926 until the 1930's.

The deceased was a member of the Ontonagon Twp Board of Education for many years & served as president of the Board at the time the Elementary school was constructed in 1938.

He was a member & past master of the Ontonagon Masonic Lodge & served as secretary of the Lodge for many years. He was a member of the Ahmed Temple Shrines of Marquette & life member of Minerva Chapter Royal Arch Masons of Bessemer & a member of North Star Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. He was also a life member of the Ontonagon Golf Club . He was a member of the Duplicate Bridge Club.

Surviving are his wife, 2 daughters, Mrs. Nolan Olson-Ont. & Mrs. Ralph Roth-Lowell, 7 grandchildren & 2 sisters, Mrs. Henry Heller-Wausau & Mrs. Edw. Frederick-Milwaukee.

Funeral services held at Driscoll Funeral Home, conducted by the Masonic Lodge. Rev. James McKeever officiating. Burial in the Riverside Cemetery.y
