James Thomas Gaynor served as a Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps in the Headquarters & Service Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, United States Marine Corps. He served during the Vietnam War.

He was a son of Leo Joseph Gaynor and Alice Harriet Gaynor.

JAMES GAYNOR DIES IN VIETNAM

Word was received here recently of the death of Sgt. Major James T. Gaynor, 48, husband of Betty Appley Gaynor, formerly of Marietta. Sgt. Gaynor was killed on Feb. 15 at Quang Tri, Vietnam.

Born in New Orleans, he was a son of the late George and Alice Walker Gaynor. He and his wife resided in Jacksonville, N. C.

Sgt. Gaynor served 28 years in the Marine Corps, serving in World War II and the Korean conflict. He also served on embassy duty in Paris and Rome. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Edward F. at home; a brother, Leo Gaynor, Ventura, Calif.; and two sisters, Miss Dorothy Gaynor, and Mrs. Arthur Swanson, both of New Orleans.
