Lelah Belle Abel

Lelah Belle Abel, 81, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Heritage House Convalescent Center in Martinsville. She was a resident of Martinsville.

She was born Sept. 3, 1918, in Lawrence County. Her parents were Delbert and Mary Jane (Root) Wray. She married Francis James Abel on Nov. 24, 1934. He preceded her in death June 3, 1997. Survivors include three sons, Richard "Dick" Abel of Indianapolis, James "Jim" Abel of Martinsville and Christopher "Chris" Abel of Fort Bragg, N.C.; a daughter, Rosalind Mitchell of Carmel; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Anthony Wayne Abel; two sisters, Helen Williams and Lola Brooking; and a brother, Ralph Kenneth Wray.

She was employed by St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church for 18½ years, retiring in 1993.

She was a member of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Helmsberg Garden Club, Helmsberg Homemakers, St. Martin of Tours Altar Society and Golden Circle. She was a former member of St. Agnes Chapel in Nashville.

Father Mark Gottemoeller will conduct a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Martinsville. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 8:30 a.m. until service time at Neal & Summers Mortuary. Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. Martin's Catholic Cemetery in Martinsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church Kitchen Building Fund, 1709 E. Harrison St., Martinsville, IN 46151.
