Served in the Civil War. In 1861, at age 17, joined the CSA with his father and brother Lucas. In 1862, his father was killed and his brother was captured. Thomas was captured at the Battle of Helena, Arkansas, July 4, 1863, and held prisoner at Alton, Illinois Prison, and then Fort Delaware Prison, until 1865. He had 3 brothers who served on the other side.
