The name Ercilla is Greek and means "delicate and gentle".
Her father chose her name out of a book.

Ercilla's early years were very tough. Her father was a strict man with a terrible temper. As the only daughter she must have felt very alone.
Bill Cole wrote: "I found that Ercilla at age 25 was working at a shirt factory (as a "sleever") in Norwalk and living at home, and then she disappears. Absolutely nothing in the 1930 census. Working in a shirt factory in Norwalk was no fun...they were "sweat shops". In those days the children in the family turned over their paychecks to father and maybe they got a little spending money."
Her lovely mother, Mary Elizabeth passed away in 1920 and Ercilla's lonely life would change drastically over the next year.
In 1921 Ercilla met Walter J. Hynard and fell in love. Her father rejected the marriage and they eloped and began their lives together without the support and love of her family.
They had a happy and loving marriage that produced three children: Walter Jr, Melvin, and Mary Elizabeth (named after her grandmother).
Walter's career took the family to different locations in New York State. They eventually settled in Oneida NY where Walter worked for a silverware company.
Times were hard and they often did not have a great deal of money, but the family was close and loving. Ercilla enjoyed being a mother and took wonderful care of her children. The two sons were very close (born only 12 months apart!) and Ercilla was close to Mary Elizabeth.
Sadly, Ercilla suffered a stroke which was then followed by another stroke a few years later. She passed away too young at only 54 years old.
