A Darlington man drowned last weekend after falling into a cistern beneath his home, Darlington Police Chief James Tuescher said Wednesday.
The body of Lawrence Quinn, 38, was found Wednesday after Quinn who lived alone, had failed to arrive at work in Monroe for the third straight day, Tuescher said.
Quinn had apparently been outside his home Sunday at 215 Hill St., replacing a kitchen window when he fell through the cistern's particle board cover.
Cistern's were common in old homes built before modern septic systems, and were used to catch rainwater. There was seven to eight feet of water in the cistern and four fee between the surface of the water and the cistern cover, Tuescher said.
