Ilene, as she was affectionately known by family and a host of friends, received her formal education attending the Guide Rock schools. On January 2, 1935 she was united in marriage with Clifford H. DeLay at Mankato, Kansas. The young couple began their life together on a farm south of Guide Rock. They later moved north of town in 1938, and to their family farm in November of 1942. She took an active part in the farm chores which included raising chickens and helping to milk the cows. This union was blessed with three sons Clifford Eugene, Allen Duane and Robert Lee, and one daughter, Karen Mae.
Ilene gave herself to the Lord in 1956, and faithfully attended the New Hope Church and took an active part in the New Hope Sunday School near her home. On January 16, 1978, Cliff passed away and she moved into Guide Rock where she attended the United Methodist Church.
In her leisure time her love for quilting netted her many beautiful quilts. She cherished her time of the years with the Guide Rock Methodist Quilters, a group which she helped to start. She volunteered her time for a number of years as the secretary for the Guide Rock Senior Nutrition Council Center. She enjoyed playing cards, and was a sports fan - especially enjoying following baseball and all of the Guide Rock High School sports activities. Ilene was also a longtime member of the HC Club. As her health failed, Ilene moved to Alma where she resided for several years, then moved to Crete for a period of time before becoming a resident at the Rest Haven Care Center in Harvard.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Cliff; a grandson, and one brother, Clifford Bailey.
Left to treasure her memory are her children, Gene DeLay and wife Janine of Riverton, Wyoming; Duane DeLay of Blue Hill, Nebraska; Bob DeLay of Harvard, Nebraska; and Karen DeLay of Alma, Nebraska. Also surviving are her sister-in-law, Edith Mefford of Franklin, Nebraska; 6 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.
