John W. Newell was born 1819 in Franklin, Warren County, OH, the 3rd of 4 known surviving children (all boys), born to farmer James Hugh Newell and his wife, Eliza Dessausure Hankinson.

He is descended on both sides of his family tree from early and prominent settlers in Monmouth County, NJ. He was the paternal grandson of this family's patriarch, Hugh Newell (1743-1816) who came to Freehold in the late 1700's from County Down, Ireland, and married there to Elizabeth Truax. Hugh was as a member of the Committee of Safety of Monmouth County and served as a patriot in the Revolution. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandson of James Hankinson & Sarah Dunham of Freehold.

John's parents left their farm in Freehold in about 1816, heading west to homestead in Warren County, Ohio, following Gen. William C. Schenck of NJ who founded the town of Franklin with homesteaders from New Jersey. They traveled with their infant son, Azariah Dunham Newell (1815-1895). In Ohio, their 3 younger sons would be born: William Augusta Newell (1817-1901), John W., and William Dunham Newell (b. ca. 1821-1823). After a half dozen years or so in Ohio, the Newells returned to the family farm in Freehold.

All 3 of John's brothers would become doctors, and were successful and well known men of their time. Eldest brother, Azariah became a prominent physician in New Brunswick and in 1849 was the first City Physician of New Brunswick. William A. Newell was a practicing physician and was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1847-1851), the 23rd Governor of New Jersey (1857-1860), Governor of Washington Territory (1880-84), and was the U.S. Indian inspector from 1884 to 1885.

By about 1847, the 27-year old had entered business, clerking in Elizabeth, NJ where he met and married in 1848 to Martha Crane Earle, the 19-year old daughter of James Earle and Esther Sayre Hunt of Secaucus.

The couple removed to New Brunswick where John engaged in business with the late James Bishop, under the firm name of Bishop & Newell, as dealers in grain, feed, shipping stores, etc.

John and Martha would become parents of 7 known children (4 boys/3 girls):

* Mary E. Newell (1849-1876)
* James Hugh Newell (1853-1854)
* Azariah Dunham Newell (1858-1858)
* Edward William Newell (1867-1885)
* Walter W. Newell (1861-1926), Chicago
* Caroline "Carrie" Newell(1855-1947)
* Augusta Newell(1859-1942)

By 1860, John was involved with the manufacture of rubber in New Brunswick, but he left the business to join the Union troops fighting the Civil War. He was 42 years old when he enlisted on September 5, 1861, in the 4th New Jersey Volunteers. Some time after, he was appointed paymaster, and at the close of the war was assigned to pay off the New Jersey troops. He retired from the service with the brevet rank of Lieutenant Colonel for meritorious conduct.

Returning to New Brunswick, Col. Newell became the Superintendent of the New Brunswick Gas Light Company, where he remained for the next 29 years. Throughout his life was identified with many civic, benevolent, historical and literary associations.

John W. Newell died in 1897 at age 77. His wife of 49 years survived him 20 years, passing in 1917 at age 87.

He was remembered by his contemporaries as a man of strong and attractive personality, a keen observer, courteous and affable, and of a well-ordered mind, a man whose friendship was highly prized by those who had the good fortune to win it.

Only 3 of his children survived him -- Walter, Caroline and Augusta. The two daughters never married and are buried here.

Walter (b. July 22, 1861) removed to Chicago, IL where he married Mary Tennyson Joplin in 1889 and had 2 children -- Dorothy May Newell and Kenneth Earl Newell. He died in Chicago On July 12, 1926.
