Abbie was born Sarah E. Floyd to Mayhew Floyd and Ellen Jane Drew, who married in 1859 and separated around 1861. Her father, Mayhew, disappears from records after the 1860 census. Her mother died in 1870. She was known as Abbie Sarah Floyd and lived with Samuel Lord and his wife Lydia J. (Downs). Abbie S. Floyd was informally adopted by Samuel and Lydia Lord around the age of 11. At age 21 she petitioned the court and legally changed her name to Abbie Sarah Lord. Abbie's siblings were taken in by two different families, but they kept in contact with each other throughout their lives. Her siblings were Emma Rose (Floyd) Wiggin and half brother Daniel B. Alley.
She married Frank W. Colby and they had 3 children. Daughter Ida, daughter Elizabeth who died in infancy, and son Charles Lord Colby.
Her husband, Frank, was the grand nephew of Abbie's adoptive parents, Samuel and Lydia Lord. Abbie was a dressmaker.
