Lewis Charles Henkel, son of the late r. and Mrs. Charles L. Henkel, pioneer Decatur residents, died early Sunday morning at his home, 511 Sherman Street. He had been in ill health several months.

Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the residence, 511 Sherman Street, Rev. T.G. Henry and Rev. E.M. Chapman officiating.

Mr. Henkel was born Sept. 16, 1880, at Nokomis, Ill. and moved to Decatur in 1887. He was educated in Decatur schools and Athens Agricultural School. A member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity, he received a .B.S. degree from the University of Alabama in 1902 and a Master's degree from the University in 1904.

After leaving the University he was with the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company laboratories at Ensley and later went to the Atlantic Steel company in Atlanta, Ga. During World War I he served as consultant inspector of R.W Hunt and company, supervising construction of steel to be used in aviation in France.

Mr. Henkel became chief metallurgist with the U.S. Steel company in Gary, Indiana, and then was named assistant general superintendent in production of shrapnel steel at the Comwell Steel Company in Lorain, Ohio. He later became chief metallurgist with the Jones-Lauglin Company in Pittsburgh, Pa.

In 1922 he returned to Alabama as chief chemist with the TCI and in 1925 was appointed superintendent of the Fairfield Steel Works for TCI. From 1925 to 1937 he was a member of the Open Hearth Furnice Construction committee of U.S. Steel.

Mr. Henkel retired in 1937, returning to Decatur to look after his real estate interest. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Morgan County Bank and a Mason.

On Nov. 5, 1923, Mr. Henkel was married to Miss Louise N. Edminston at Springfield, Ohio.

Surviving are his wife; one sister, Mrs. Atlee H. Hoff, and one nephew, Louis G. Hoff, Texas City, Texas.

Active pallbearers will be H.A. Wyatt, A.T. Hanson, John Peach, S.M. Thompson, Ben Britnell and E.E. Graves.

Interment will be made in city cemetery , Brown directing.
