Born in Philadelphia, PA, son of the late Andrew T. and Irene Gilbert, he was a horse trainer, riding instructor, and traveling farrier, specializing in corrective horse shoeing.
Before coming to the Gap, Lancaster County area 24 years ago, he owned and operated the West Park Riding Academy in Philadelphia. During World War I, he served two enlistments in the U.S. Cavalry out of Fort Riley, Kansas. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the African and European theaters.
He was sent to farrier's school at Fort Riley, Kansas, where he became so accomplished that he accompanied the Army Jumping Team on tours, and later was official farrier on the U.S. Olympic Equestrian Team in 1924.
Mr. Gilbert studied at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a recognized judge for the American Horse Show Association for Dressage and Arabian horses.
He was a member of the Delaware Valley Dressage and Combined Training Association, the U.S. Combined Training Association, American Horse Shows Association, Inc., Eastern States Dressage Association, Potomac Valley Dressage Association, Inc., and the International Equestrian Organization.
Surviving are his widow, Florence Johnston Gilbert, two daughters, Andrea P. Gilbert and Margaret C. Gilbert, both at home. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Charles Gilbert, Mrs. Irene Wright, both of Wilmington, Del, Mrs. Helen Hargraves, Detroit, Mich, Mrs. Mildred White, Philadelphia, PA, Rodney Gilbert, Wilmington, Del, a half-sister and brother, Alberta Davis and Steven Davis, both of Newark, NJ.
Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert's youngest daughter, Margaret C. Gilbert, passed away April 2, 1996 at the age of 45.
