The La Jolla home of Roger and Ellen Revelle went on the market last month with a list price of $14 million, the first time it's been available for sale in 78 years. Patrons and audiences of the La Jolla Playhouse may remember Ellen Revelle as a scion of the Scripps family and a philanthropist. Students and faculty at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography remember Roger as a former director and a scientist who made major contributions to the study of carbon in the atmosphere and the ocean. UC San Diego graduates know the Revelle name for Revelle College, so-called because of the pivotal role the couple played in getting UCSD founded (Roger thought there should be a college to better train the SIO's graduate students). Some female graduates of the college may have attended the annual teas Ellen used to host at the house every year, as the Los Angeles Times said she did.
