Served in the Black Hawk War, Co. C. 6th U.S. Infantry. Was appointed 2nd Lt. from Kentucky 20 Sep 1819; and resigned commission 31 Jul 1837.

A commanding officer at Fort Leavenworth in 1832, Capt. Wickliffe was present at the signing of the Treaties with the Oto & Missouri Tribes in 1825; and also present at the signing of the Treaty with the Kickapoo tribe in 1832.

He was married to and Ann Hertzog on November 14th, 1831, at the Cantonment Leavenworth at the residence of John Dougherty and his wife, Mary (Hertzog), who was the sister of the bride.

Wickliffe street in Collinsville is named after him.
