The son of George & Elizabeth (Johnson) Brougher, he married Martha B. lnu (Last Name Unknown). ca. 1844 and fathered Mary Ann (b. 11/01/45), John Calvin (b. 09/14/49), and Margaret Elizabeth (b. 03/30/54). in 1860, he was a farmer living with his family in Carroll Township, York County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 5" tall with black hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted at the stated age of thirty-six in York County November 9, 1862, and mustered into federal service at York November 11 as a private with Co. C, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"). On July 16, 1863, he was admitted to a Sanitary Commission hospital in Washington DC for treatment of dysentery and discharged the service to date July 28, 1863. He died from the effects of the disease at his home.
