A Civil War veteran, he was drafted at the stated age of thirty-six in York County November 9, 1862, and mustered into federal service at York November 11 as a private with Co. C, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"). On July 16, 1863, he was admitted to a Sanitary Commission hospital in Washington DC for treatment of dysentery and discharged the service to date July 28, 1863. He died from the effects of the disease at his home.
