On July 6, 2010, Jennie Miles passed away peacefully in her home in Pony, with her family near her side.

Diagnosed with cancer in February, Jennie fought the battle with all she had. Though not a long fight, Jennie was able to show us all how to have grace under pressure, to fight for what you believe in, and how to cherish each moment we have.

The youngest of seven children, Jennie was born on Jan. 9, 1941, in Bozeman. She graduated from Manhattan High School in 1959, and married Bernard Sievert in 1959.

Later divorced, Jennie married Joe Miles of Winston in February 1970, with whom she spent 40 wonderful years. Joe and Jennie lived in Billings from 1970 to 1986, where they raised three children and were able to indulge in their many passions.

Jennie's love for animals was obvious in her abilities to break and train horses, breed and raise many champion miniature dachshunds, and her innate knack for assessing, treating and healing any wounded stray brought her way.

In 1986, Joe and Jennie relocated to Pony, where she worked as caretaker for Harrison Lake and the Valley View Cemetery in Pony. She was instrumental in her work with the Fish and Game Department as the lab manager for the only state-run research laboratory for whirling disease. Jennie committed 20-plus years to this project.

Among her many hobbies, Jennie most enjoyed spending time in and cultivating her garden, both floral and vegetable. People came from miles around to see the beauty of the blooms and perhaps, to enjoy the unbelievable girth of her prize quality onions. Many a day, Jennie enjoyed resting on her porch where she could see and smell the blossoms, and hear the distinctive song of the birds with which she was so familiar.

Jennie is survived by her husband, Joe; her son, Vince Sievert and wife, Karen of Gainesville, Va.; daughter, Gina Ritz of Billings; son, Tim Miles and wife, Rhonda of Billings; stepdaughter, Rhonda Simmons of Helena; and stepson, Les Poelman of Manhattan. Jennie was blessed with 12 grandchildren: Jenna, Wayne, Shannah, Travis, Ricky, Travis, Austin, Rhianne, Caillee, Keisha, Cerissa, and Marcus; and one great-grandchild, Jaylee. She is also survived by her sisters, Ruby, Cora, Jean and Lola.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth "Girlie"; and parents, Henry and Jennie Verwolf.

We will miss Jennie dearly. She was a loving wife, caring mother and compassionate friend with a generous spirit who was willing to help anyone with anything; she always managed to set a good example and was respected and admired for all her many accomplishments. She was and is the heartbeat of her family. As each day dawns, we hear the birds sing, see and smell the flowers bloom - and we - we remember Jennie!

A graveside memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 10, at Valley View Cemetery in Pony, with a small reception to follow at the Pony Senior Center.

Memorial donations may be made in Jennie's name to the Madison Valley Hospice of Montana, and/or to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Services are in the care of K&L Mortuaries in Harrison.
