Born in Indianapolis, Indiana at Saint Vincent Hospital on November 14, 1937 to Harold Christian Schmink and Josephine Mildred McMahon Schmink, their oldest of four daughters. She was a life long member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church parish. She attended Our Lady of Lourdes Grade School and St Mary Academy. She studied at Franklin College, IU, Marian College and was a life long learner. She was an elementary school teacher 30+ years for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis at St. Bernadette, St. Simon the Apostle and Our Lady of Lourdes Grade Schools. She developed and opened the first kindergarten for Our Lady of Lourdes Grade School. She, also taught at Grace Lutheran School. Ms. Schmink retired from teaching in 1994. She also was a flight attendant three years for American Flyers' Airline. She was a member of the American Flyers' Association. In her private time she loved reading, art, gardening and horseback riding and spending time with her family and friends. She rescued and fostered dogs, cats, horses and ponies. She bottle fed and fostered many needy kittens. Saundra was also a woman of prayer and was known for her "peacekeeping" among family and friends. Her mother and father, sister Mary preceded her in death. Sandy died after a long battle with cancer at the age of 64. She did not let her sufferings get her down. She was a woman of great courage. Memorial contributions were made to the Carmelite Monastery and Southside Animal Shelter. Calling was 4 to 9 PM March 5, 2002 at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel. Funeral Mass was 11 AM March 6, 2002. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery. Surviving sisters: Donna Marie Schmink, Rosemarie Schmink Stroud, nieces and nephews.
