CANON CITY, CO.--Ira Abildgaard, a former Kansas legislator and retired Oxford, KS businessman, died in a rest home here Sunday. He was 83.
He was a state representative from Sumner CO. for two terms between 1957 and 1960. He was a member of the Oxford City Council for 13 years and was mayor of that city for 3 years.
He was born Feb. 9, 1888 at Clifton, IL. He married Mabel Raboin June 16, 1909 in Clifton and the couple moved to Oxford in 1912 where Abildgaard established his farm implement and hardware business which he ran until retiring a few years ago. His wife died in 1968.
In addition to serving in city and state governments, he was a member of the United Methodist Church in Oxford, Oxford Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite bodies and the Oxford School Board. He was a charter member of the Oxford Lions Club.
Survivors include 4 daughters, Mrs. Charlotte Worden, Canon City; Mrs. Ruth Clark, Independence, KS., Mrs. Margaret Sparks, Tucson and Mrs. Dorothea Cooney, Englewood, CO.; two brothers, William Abildgaard, Saratoga, CA. and Mark Abildgaard, Wichita, and 6 grandchildren.
Services will be Thurs. in Oxford with burial in the Oxford Cemetery. Oliver Mortuary is in charge.
