Comrade A. Short Answers Summons
Augustus Short, pioneer of Anaconda, veteran of the civil war, former public administrator, a highly respected citizen, 72 years old, died at St. Ann's hospital yesterday. His last illness was of several weeks duration. For more than a year Mr. Short had gradually declined, until he sought his bed a few weeks ago. He suffered a stroke of paralysis, from which he never recovered, although he was conscious up to near the end.
Mr. Short came to Anaconda more than 20 years ago from Utah. He began his business career here as an agent for a sewing machine company, and his first years in the business were most pleasant ones. With a determination characteristic of the sturdy soldier, he valiantly fought against what seemed to be a harsh fate, but he won, and the world seemed brighter. He often told old comrades that, "I started out here with nothing but 5 cents" worth of gingersnaps and a goodly quantity of ginger of my own. About 12 years ago he established a music house here and succeeded. However, in recent years he met reverses. Yet he trudged along with a brave heart. Advanced age handicapped him. Illness came upon him, and in face of these obstacles he stood unfinchingly.
In 1861 Mr. Short, a native of Pennsylvania, went with the Fifty-eighth infantry of that state to defend the union causes. After the war he came West, settling in Utah, where he joined the army that has done so much toward the successful development of that state.
Mr. Short is survived by his wife, a son, A. Short of Anaconda; two daughters, Miss Alma and Mrs. E. H. Smith of Thatcher, Idaho; two brothers, J. F. Short of Portland, Ore., and Temple Short of Ogden, and a sister, Mrs. Lucinda Patrick of Missoula. The brother Temple and the children were at the bedside when death came. Mrs. Short is critically ill at the family home. The widow is the second wife of Mr. Short, her children being Mrs. Verda Trumbull, Mrs. Clara Williams and Miss Esma Johnson. Mr. Short had since his arrival here taken a deep interest in matters pertaining to the Grand Army of the Republic, of which he was a member. The local post will have charge of the funeral, which will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock.
