With deep sorrow do we report the death of a very dear friend and neighbor, at the home of her youngest daughter, Mrs. Warren L, Pierce. Mrs. Emily Porter died Wednesday, December 6, 1916, after a brief illness which deemed like a cold; she was in bed only two days. All that kind and loving hands could do was done, that she might regain her strength, but the Heavenly Father sought to give her rest and a home in Heaven, at the age of 83 years, 6 months, 24 days.

We have not words to relate the interest she ever manifested in behalf of others for their comfort, and along the lines of Christianity and temperance she was a very able leader and was a loyal member of the Christian church and of the local W. C. T. U. since its organization here in 1881, taking an active part until her strength failed. Her life was noble and great and good; she scattered seeds of kindness all along the way.

Mrs. Porter had had an unusual amount of business cares since the death of her husband, John W. Porter, in September, 1915, but she bore it bravely, Her first husband, Mr. Zenas Ingraham, died October 18, 1860. Mrs. Porter retained her faculties so perfectly that her mind was as clear and active as when she was younger.

She leaves as living monuments her five estimable children, who have loved and cared for her: MTB. William Patch, of Prattsburgh; Mrs. S. L. Tozer, of Ithaca; Mrs. F. E. Dunton, of Middlesex, and F. B. Ingraham and Mrs. W. L. Pierce, of Naples. Mrs. Pierce was with and cared for her mother since seven years ago, when the home cares seemed too great for her to bear.

The funeral was held front the Pierce home on Saturday at 1 pm, Rev. A. H. McKnight officiating, and burial was made in Rose Ridge cemetery.

In memory of Emily J. Porter, who was born in Prattsburgh May 12, 1833, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Esther Pierce, in West Hollow, on December 6, 1916, having lived in Naples more than sixty-five years. Emily J. Lamphier was married on April 4, 1852, to Zenas Ingraham, who died October 18, 1865, leaving her alone with the care of five small children. On November 23, 1869, she married John W. Porter, who died on September 14, 1915. To them was born a son, Albert, who lived only eighteen months. She is survived by her five children: Mrs. Martha Tozer, of Ithaca; Mrs. Mary Patch, Prattsburgh; Mrs. Harriet Dunton, Middlesex, and F. B. Ingraham and Mrs. Esther Pierce, of Naples, besides grand and great grandchildren; one, though not legally adopted, Herbert Deuel, of Honeoye, was under the guidance of her mother love from a small child, until he married and went to a home of his own; and there are still others who can testify to her gentle influence and timely monitions.

Since her health visibly failed, about seven years ago, she had been tenderly and untiringly cared for by her youngest daughter. The bonds of love grew ever stronger as each year went by and the passing of the mother leaves a deep sense of loneliness in the heart of the daughter, and all will miss the cordial welcome of her who has gone from the home where they so long have met her.

Her belief was with the Christian church, but so long as health permitted she labored denominations. She was a charter member of the West Hollow W. C. T. U. and a county life member.

Her funeral was held from the home of her daughter on Saturday at 1 pm, Rev. A. H. McKnight, pastor of the Naples Baptist church, officiating. He spoke from the 16th chapter of Psalms, and the text, "Thou wilt show me the path of life," which so beautifully and truthfully portrayed the faith and trust of the deceased. Surely, we should all rise up and call her blessed for setting us such an example of goodness. Burial in Rose Ridge cemetery by the side of her loved ones gone before. One who had long known her.
