Clair R. Simpson, the son of James Lee and Mae (Robinson) Simpson, was born February 16, 1921 at Guide Rock, Nebraska. He departed this life on Friday, March 2, 2001 at his home in Guide Rock at the age of 80 years and 16 days.

Clair received his formal education attending the Guide Rock schools, where he graduated with the class of 1939. He was in the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) for a period of time, before serving his country in World War II. On December 19, 1942 he was united in marriage with Shirley Paulger at Red Cloud. A veteran of the United Stated Army, Clair served in the medical corp in the European Theatre of Operations where he earned a Bronze Star. Following his discharge from service at war's end he returned to the Guide Rock community to make his home. Clair worked as a mason in the family plastering business until he retired in 1980.

In his leisure time Clair enjoyed collecting Indian relics from the area, working in his garden, woodworking, and mushroom hunting along the river. He was also an avid reader. His greatest love and enthusiasm in life was for his children and grandchildren, and he especially cherished the time they spent together.

He was a member of the Guide Rock V.F.W. and American Legion Posts.

Preceding him in death were his parents, and five brothers: Carl, Harold "Bub", John, Robert and Donald Simpson.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Shirley; his children and families: Claire Louise Williams and husband Gary of Hastings, Nebraska, and children Mike and Lisa Schmidt and children Michael, Gabrielle, Madeleine and Alexander; Steve and Julie Schmidt and children Jesse and Jonah; Angie Williams and John Williams; Nancy Schutte and husband Ron of Guide Rock and children: Melissa and John Turner and son Simon; Nichole and John Schumm and son Trenton; Amy and Brad Edgar and daughter Avery; and Ben Schutte; Ron Simpson of Guide Rock and son, Brian Simpson; Ken and Joy Simpson of Gretna, Nebraska and children: Brad and Jolene Simpson, Jennifer and Rob Long and Rachel Simpson; and Dean and Anita Simpson of Guide Rock and children: Melody Simpson and Mark and DeeDee Simpson and son Zachary; nieces; nephews; other relatives and his many friends.
