Harold D. Cullen, ex-newsman, dies

Harold Dempster Cullen, 79, retired newspaper editor and leader in the advertising and public relations fields many years, died Wednesday at a local hospital.
Born April 21, 1882, at Peshtigo, Wis.*, Mr. Cullen began his career as a school teacher at Blocton. He was later principal of Blocton Elementary School and Marengo County High School.
Coming to Birmingham in 1911, he worked for the advertising department of The Birmingham News. He was also editor of the Educational Exchange of Birmingham, a teachers' publication.
Mr. Cullen organized the Direct Advertising Service and became its president. He and his wife operated the agency 25 years before they went to Washington, where Mr. Cullen did work for the investigating committee of Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black, then a U.S. senator.
Mr. Cullen was later a research writer for the Labor Department and the War Shipping Board.
In 1947, he became editor-manager of The Bertie Ledger Advance in Windsor, N.C. While he was editor, this newspaper won second place in a national contest for news coverage. He was an adviser to the school of journalism of the University of Missouri.
Mr. Cullen was a regular contributor many years to The Coal Bin, the column conducted by Henry Vance in The Birmingham News, under the name "Pop" Cullen. He contributed book reviews to this newspaper and the Alabama Methodist Advocate.
He was active in the Oldtimers, Inc., and the National Association of Retired Civil Service Employes on local and national levels. He organized the Golden Age Club of the McCoy Methodist Church.
SURVIVING - ARE HIS wife, Mrs. Bessie F. Cullen; four sons, Harold F. Cullen and C. Lawrence Cullen of Birmingham; Herbert L. Cullen of Silver Springs, Md., and Frank H. Cullen of Birmingham, Mich.; a brother, Lester M. Cullen of Birmingham, a sister, Mrs. Rena Miller of Birmingham; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Johns-Ridout's Church Chapel. Dr. W.E. Curl will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood.
Pallbearers will be H. William Cullen, Richard L. Cullen, Lewis K. Cullen, L. Preston Cullen, Kelly Cullen and Dr. Frank L. Vines.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Brotherhood Class and Golden Age Club of McCoy Methodist Church.
