John S. Johnson of Gibbstown, NJ died of complications following an explosion at the duPont plant on October 26, along with a co-worker, Joseph Burnell. John was the chief of both the plant and town fire companies and had been employed for 35 years by duPont at the time of his death. He served as treasurer of Greenwich Township for nine years, was a member of the Masons, and the Gloucester County Fire Chiefs' Association.

John was a son of Franklin "Frank" Johnson and Elizabeth Somers Johnson. He had one sibling, Harry A. Johnson, who lived to adulthood. Two siblings, Kate and Lorenzo, apparently died in childhood as they were only listed in one US Census.

John was married to Linda Gibison Johnson and they had three children: Esther Johnson Bridgers, Katherine "Katie" Patton Johnson Brooks, and Alvin Hartman Johnson. His brother, Harry, married his wife's sister, Ida Gibison. Both couples are buried in Eglington Cemetery, as well as, John and Linda's daughter, Katie, and her husband.
