Obituary, Ben M. Decker--
Ben M. Decker was born on July 31, 1897 in Thunum, Ostfreisland, Germany. He was one of eight children born to Goeche Ihnen Decker and Tomma Post Decker. His parents and three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

On September 12, 1897, Ben Decker was baptized in the Lutheran Church in Thunum Germany. On April 4, 1912 he was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in the Church in Thunum, Germany. At that time he vowed to remain faithful to his Lord, till death. He served the Lord in his church and attended services and Holy Communion regularly.

At the age of 18 years he was drafted into the German army and served 3 1/2 years as a soldier in World War I.

In August 22, 1923, at the age of 26, Ben came to the United States and settled in Glenvil, Nebr. Ben and his brother, Ilit, worked together for many years in the Decker Cafe and in later years he operated his own café in Glenvil, Nebraska.

On March 4, 1936, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Clara Frey. To this union was born three girls.

Ben Decker had worked the past 18 years as custodian of the Glenvil school. He was a friend to all of the students and teachers that have attended the Glenvil school.

Besides his activities as a custodian, he served for many years on the school board the town board and volunteer fire department of the Glenvil community, Ben was also a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Glenvil.

About three months ago, Ben became ill and was admitted to the Mary Lanning Hospital for surgery. On Easter afternoon, Ben, his wife and daughter, Della, received private communion by his pastor at the hospital. His strength seemed to improve following the operation but about a week later his pain returned. It was later discovered that he had cancer. After a stay at the Mary Lanning Hospital, he returned home and was cared for by his wife and daughters and friends until Wednesday evening, June 8, when he was taken to a Hastings hospital. On Monday afternoon, June 13, at about 2:45 p.m. the Lord relieved Ben of his pain and took him home. The Lord had called and our departed brother was ready. He reached the age of 62 years and 11 months.

Surviving are his wife, Clara, daughters, Mrs. Myron Tjarks of Glenvil, Miss Linda Decker at home and Miss Della Decker of Colorado Springs, Colo., one sister, Mrs. Hetty Molton of Thunum, Germany and many relatives and friends.

Services were held on June 16 with a prayer service at the Livingston-Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings at 1 p.m. and services at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Glenvil at 2 p.m. Rev Arnold W. Vocke was the officiating pastor. Interment was in the Glenvil cemetery (sic).
