Had Been in Ill Health Since Death of Distinguished Husband Last May

MRS. AMELIA KNAPPEN, widow of JUDGE LOYAL E. KNAPPEN of the United States circuit court of appeals, died at 11:30 p.m. yesterday, after having been in failing health since the death of her husband last May. She was 76 years old.

She was born in Orleans county, New York, Jan. 25, 1854, and came to Hastings, Mich., with her parents as a young girl. In Hastings she met and married Judge Knappen, at that time a young practicing attorney there and a native of that city.

In 1888 the couple moved to Grand Rapids, where Judge Knappen, a partner in the law firm of Stuart & Knappen, rose rapidly to eminence in his profession. He was honored by both bench and bar with many positions of importance before his retirement from active service in 1924. Mrs. Knappen, who after his death, continued to live at their home, 330 Washington st., SE, was a partner in all his successes.

She leaves two sons, STUART E. KNAPPEN, 322 Fountain st., NE., and FRED M. KNAPPEN, 1110 Worden st., SE; a daughter, MRS. ARTHUR D. PERRY, 433 Madison ave., SE; a sister, MRS. WILLIAM J. STUART, 245 Cherry st., SE, and nine grandchildren.

Mrs. Knappen was a member of St. Mark's pro-cathedral. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
