RAYMOND ALWOOD, B-29 GUNNER, DIES
Wounds Are Fatal to Local Boy Based on Corsica
Sgt. Raymond J. Alwood died January 2 from wounds received in action against the enemy, according to a telegram from the War Department to his wife, Mrs. Stella Lebo Alwood, 150 East North Street.
Sgt. Alwood, who was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl B. Alwood, 147 East North Street, would have been 21 years old had he lived until the 6th of January. Before entering the service in April, 1942, he attended Carlisle High School and was employed by Kruger's Dairy.
His basic training was received in Norfolk, Va., from where he was sent to Seattle, Wash. While stationed in Seattle, he transferred to the Air Corp and went to Santa Anna, Calif. At Los Vegas, Nev., he earned his gunner's wings, later being graduated as a flight engineer at Amarillo, Texas. At Greenville, S. C., he underwent combat training and was sent overseas last August.
He completed 26 missions over enemy lines as an engineer gunner in a B-25 medium bomber, stationed with the 12th Air Force in Corsica.
Sgt. Alwood was a member of St. Patrick's Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Sons of the American Legion. His brother, 1st Lt. Carl B Alwood, Jr., is also a member of the Army Air Corps, stationed at Chanute Field, Ill.
