John was the first of six children born to Joseph & Anna (Farmer) Ballinger. He married Melinda Alice Mitchell on Nov 13, 1851 in Grant Co. She was the daughter of William H. & Emily (Cole) Mitchell. They had eight children, Husten b. 1852-1852, Amanda 1857-1869, Levi 1859-1863, Eli b. 1863, Del Cena b. 1869, Viola b. 1872, Etta Jane b. 1875, and Jasper b. 1878.
John was an early settler of Grant Co. where he established himself in 1852 west of Upland in Jefferson Twp. He was a lifelong farmer and a member of Jefferson Christian Church of which Jefferson Cemetery is a part. John is a gt-grandfather of Wanda J. Liepse Stough.
