John was a native of Oldenburg, Germany. In 1875, along with his future wife Sophia Von Bokern, he immigrated to the United States and settled in Louisville, KY. On 10 Oct 1877 the couple was married and they had eight children: Frederick, Catherine, Sophia, Elizabeth, John, Joseph, Herminia and another son also named Joseph. For many years he worked in the breweries of Louisville, KY, including the old Stein's Brewery. Later in life he owned and tended a bar in the Germantown section of the city. He died of acute dilation of the heart and cirrhosis of the liver.
