War Veteran Dead ~ Thomas H. Appleby Expired Christmas Day at His Home in Bolivar Township, Aged 80 Years.
Thomas H, Appleby, a Civil war veteran and retired farmer died at 10:30 o'clock Christmas day at his home on Horse Run, town of Bolivar. He was aged 80 years. The infirmities of age and congestion of the lungs caused death, following a month's illness.
The funeral will .be held at his late (home at 10 o'clock this Thursday morning, Elder George Kenyon of Richburg officiating. The body will be interred in the Bolivar cemetery.
The deceased was born at Spafford, Onondaga county, New York, April 29, 1831. When nine years old he came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Appleby, to Wirt township. On November 24, 1853, he was united in .marriage at Friendship to Delia Mary Ann VanNess, who survives him, together with one son, Layton D. Appleby, who have the sympathy of all in their bereavement.
In Bolivar in September, 1864, Mr. Appleby enlisted as a private in Company B. 189th New York Volunteers. He was to the battle of Petersburg, Weldon Railroad and Appomattox. He was discharged from the service on May 30, 1865. He was a pensioner and a member of Bolivar H. C. Gardner Post No. 247, which he joined in 1882.
Mr. Appleby had been a resident of Bolivar township for the past 42 years. He was a well-known farmer; a kindly man; a generous neighbor and friend who will be greatly missed by a host of friends.
