A tragedy occurred early Sunday morning southeast of Frankfort near Cyclone in which the parents of a Mulberry man lost their lives in a fire which destroyed their home. The couple, Mr. and Mrs. Francis J. Baer, parents of Cleo Baer, had made plans to move to their son's home here Monday and had on Saturday brought some smaller articles, including their canned fruit.

The fire was first seen by a neighbor at about 4:45 a. m. and at about the same time by a motorist on State Road 39. By the time persons reached the dwelling it was a blazing inferno. After it had burned down the blackened torsos of the two victims could be discerned on an iron bed. Frankfort firemen went to the scene with a pumper and wet down the spot so the remains could be removed. They were taken by Coroner Moore to the L. E. Moore & Son funeral home in Frankfort.

Francis J. Baer was born a quarter-mile west of Mattix Corner, November 13, 1870, the son of Jonathan and Leanna Baer. Mrs. Baer was born Nora Harris, in Clinton county, February 14, 1873, daughter of Henry and Amanda Harris. They were married December 11, 1897. Survivors are three sons, Cleo of Mulberry and John and Francis Jr. of Detroit; two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Brown of North Vernon and Mrs. Lucille Shoup of Fowler; a sister, Alice Baer of Mulberry; a half-sister and two half brothers, Mrs. Pearl Johnson and Walter and Preston Baer, all of near Frankfort. A number of other relatives including nieces, a nephew and cousins, reside here.

A double funeral service was conducted in the Moore funeral home Wednesday afternoon by the Rev. W. J. Hutt. Pallbearers were nephews of Mr. and Mrs. Baer and tribute-bearers were granddaughters and nieces. Burial was in St. Luke cemetery.
