James W. Akerill

Mr. Akerill, 83, of Ashland, Ore., died Sunday, June 13, 2010, at home. He was born May 29, 1927 in Grants Pass, Ore., the son of Bessie and Milton Akerill.

He was raised in Grants Pass where he graduated from high school. He later earned a master's degree in education. During World War II he served in the United States Navy from 1945 to 1947. On June 10, 1948, in Klamath Falls, Ore., he married the former Betty Martin who preceded him in death in 2008.

Mr. Akerill lived in Ashland since 1948 and taught school at Hoover Elementary in Medford for 35 years, where he was known as Coach or Mr A. Jim was a member of the Ashland Elks Lodge #944 where he was Past Exalted Ruler and the Ashland Masonic Lodge #23, AF&AM. He was an avid golfer, skier, and a member of the Ashland Gun Club. During the summers he worked as a truck driver and river guide.

Surviving are two nieces, Margaret Prior, of Salem, Ore., and Karen Fletcher of Springfield, Ore.; two nephews, Jeffrey Martin, of Springfield, Ore., and Dayn Martin, of Jacksonville, Ore.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

The funeral for James W. Akerill will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 18, 2010, at the Litwiller Simonsen Funeral Home Ashland, with ritualistic rights by Ashland Lodge #23, AF&AM. Entombment will follow at Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland.
