41 at the time Walter was the asst. mine manager and was in the 2nd vein at the time the fire broke out. He attempted to help men escape, however smoke and Black damp were overwelming. They barricaded themselves in to seal off the smoke and poison gas. Walter was one of 21 men found alive after 8 days of being trapped underground.
