Ezra was the oldest son of Jacob Christ Frantz and Mariah Singer, who owned a large farm in the Town of Royalton, Niagara County, New York. After the Civil War, Ezra came to Michigan and settled in Wales Township, St. Clair County. There he married Emma Cole Oct. 22, 1866. They had one daughter, Alice May, born September 24, 1868. Between 1869 and 1875, Ezra owned a farm in Section 34, Wales Township, with house and woods. In 1889 Ezra was in Chicago, serving on the police force, but returned to Michigan where he lived in the Armada and Capac areas. He and Emma separated in later years.

Ezra served with the 151st New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Union, Civil War, and was present at the battles of Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor and The Wilderness. He was was sick in the hospital at the time of Gettysburg. After the war, he was active in the GAR. Letter, from the National Archives, from Jacob to Ezra's commanding officer: "Wales (Township), Aug. 6, '64, Mr. Major A. C. Lee, Dear Sir, I send you within a certificate from the attending physican for my son E. S. Frantz who was fourlughed from the hospital at Buffalo. My son is very sick and I wish you would grant a another fourlough if you please. Very respect. yours, Jacob. C. Frantz"
Ezra was "in hospital sick" July, Aug., Sept. & Oct. 1864, from Company muster roll. He returned to his regiment in November.

Physical description: age 19 years, height 5' 10", complexion brown, eyes black, hair black, where born, Royalton, New York, occupation farmer, enlisted Sept. 4, 1862, Royalton, by C. P. Clark, term 3 yrs." He was honorably discharged at Baileys Cross Roads, Virginia, on 26th June 1865.

Ross Frantz III inherited Ezra's musket. He later gave it to a fellow police officer, a native of North Carolina, when both were in San Jose, California. Ross told him "I can't guarantee it didn't shoot any sons of North Carolina!"

"Frantz, Ezra S., age 19, enlisted Sept. 4, 1862, Royalton, Pvt., Co. H., 151st Infantry. Dec. 21, 1864, transfer to Co. E., Mustered out June 26, 1865 near Washington, D. C.; $50 bounty receipt from Royalton"

"Ezra Frantz who had been seriously ill for some time with pneumonia died Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. He was a respected citizen and old settler aged about 90 years. The funeral service will be held in the Lutheran Church Monday." - Port Huron, Michigan, Times Herald
