The Evening Star (Washington, D.C.) May 29, 1899 page 10
Mrs. Mary Alden, wife of R. Percy Alden of Cornwall, Pa., who business offices are at No. 55 Liberty street, New York, died at the Normandie Hotel yesterday afternoon from the result of burns accidentally received April 14. Mrs. Alden was a sufferer from an acute nervous disease, and came here several weeks ago to secure the benefits of the climate. A candle was kept in her room because she disliked a dark apartment, and the electric light gave too brilliant a glare. In some way Mrs. Alden, who was in her bedroom with the attendant nurse, brought the candle flame in contact with her nightdress, which immediately ignited. Her breast, neck, shoulders and arms were badly burned, and the victim was rendered unconscious.
Dr. J. Taber Johnson was called, and at first it was thought the sufferer could not recover. The family physician, Dr. Frederick Paterson of New York, was summoned, and Dr. Presley M. Rixey of the navy was called into consultation. Mr. Alden arrived the day after the accident, Mrs. Alden survived the burns, and it was believed she was on the road to recovery, but a few days ago aseptic fever set in and attacked her lungs, resulting in pneumonia, which terminated fatally, as stated, at 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon.
Mr. Alden and Mr. Lloyd Warren, a brother of the unfortunate woman, were at the bedside when death occurred, and will take the remains to Troy, N.Y., for burial.
Mrs. Alden was a daughter of the late George Henry Warren of Troy, and was forty-six years old. She was large and exceedingly handsome, and the extraordinary vitality she displayed in her struggle for existence attracted the comment of the medical fraternity here.
