Born on the family farm in New Cambria near Solomon, Kansas, Dan was the third of Matt and Julia (Crough) Berigan's eight children. He was named Daniel in honor of his maternal grandfather, Daniel Crough. After the death of their father in 1926, he and several siblings lived with their mother and assisted her in maintaining the family's homestead/farm. In the 1930s he was married to Ruth Hoffman and moved into the town of Solomon where Ruth served as the area's Post-Mistress. Dan and Ruth's daughter, JoAn, was their only child. Dan owned and operated a Texaco gas/service station in St Marys.
