Leora 'Peggy' Edwards traveled to assist family
Valparaiso
-- Leora "Peggy" Edwards was considered by her family to be a doting mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Edwards, 85, a Lake County native and a Valparaiso resident, died July 24 after a lingering illness.
According to Carol Barnack, "Mom would travel great distances to lend a helping hand to her grandchildren and family. No one in the family ever lived too far away."
Barnack said her mother also loved to boast that she had 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
"She was very proud of that fact," Barnack said.
Although she devoted much of her life to assisting her family, Mrs. Edwards also spent time working, outside her home, in several careers.
"She was a floor walker, (like a manager) at Grant's, one of Gary's largest dime stores; worked as a cashier at A&P in Gary; and did floral arrangements at Reeves Flowerama in Merrillville," said Barnack, adding that Mrs. Edwards also managed a mobile home park with her late husband.
Mrs. Edwards was a charter member of the Brunswick United Presbyterian Church and the Rebecca Lodge.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol (Tom) Barnack of Knox; two sons, Ralph (Patsy) of Sanford, N. C., and Arnold (Pat) of Lake Linden, Mich.; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; one brother, Leland (Betty) Bowlby of Michigan City; and one sister, Vivian Walker of Anaheim, Calif.
Funeral services were Friday from Rendina Funeral Home, Merrillville, with the Rev. Sally Newhall officiating.
Interment is at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville.
