Maria Elisabeth Peiter was born to Philip Peter Peiter and Margaret Katherine Manher. Maria Elisabeth Peiter was supposedly born in the Großherzogtum Hessen und bei Rhein, Deutscher Bund (Grand Duchy of Hesse and by Rhine, German Confederation). The exact place of her birth is unknown. Because of the scarce knownledge concerning her birth, it is difficult to place her birth in an exact area. The Grand Duchy of Hesse became the Volksstaat Hessen (People's State of Hesse) in 1918, and then the state dissolved around 1945, whereupon the original territory of the Grand Duchy of Hesse and People's State of Hesse was divided among two other successor states; the Rheinland-Pfalz (Rheinland-Palatinate) and Groß-Hessen (Greater Hesse). The Rheinland-Palatinate exists to this day, while Greater Hesse became modern-day Hessen (Hesse). Because both the Rheinland-Palatinate and Hesse share the original Grand Duchy's territory, it is difficult to assume Maria's exact place of birth.

Maria married Fredrich Schmidt, Jr., of Fredrich Schmidt, Sr., and Roselina Lebolt, around April, 1851, in Amherst, Erie, New York. Their children include Caroline, Elizabeth Catherine, John, Peter Phillip, Amelia, and Katherine Schmidt. Maria, Fredrich, and Peter moved to Fillmore around the 1860s (Maria's other children stayed in New York). Fredrich Scmidt, Jr., died around 1876. Maria stayed for a time in Minnesota, but moved to North Dakota with the her son's large family (only under the condition that she would be buried in southern Minnesota).

Maria Elisabeth Peiter died on the 26th of November, 1906. Her body was returned to Fillmore, and she was buried in the Greenwood Cemetery, in Preston, Fillmore, Minnesota.
