He was a farmer from Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri who had previously served in the 3rd Infantry Regiment, 5th Division, Missouri State Guard. He enlisted into Co. D. 3rd Missouri Cavalry on March 28, 1862. He was wounded in the Right Arm at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia on June 27, 1864 and again in the right arm at Allatoona, Georgia on October 5, 1864.
