According to the Waukegan Weekly Gazette (Waukegan IL) October 3, 1863, a letter from Sgt. Bliss was written on September 22, 1863 which included Sgt. Ackley:
"Letter from Sergt. Bliss, 51st Regiment.
Chattanooga, Tenn., }
Sept. 22, 1863. }
FRIEND CORY: For the benefit of the friends of the Lake county boys in Co. C. 51st Reg. Ill. Vols., I write you hoping you will find room in your paper for the same.
We left Bridgeport, Ala., on the 2d day of this month and made some very heavy marches over those mountains of Georgia, thro' the dust and heat, but got into no fight worthy of any mention till Saturday, the 19th, when we went in about 4 o'clock, p. m., we were ordered to charge into a corn field, and a strip of wood on the north side of the field, here had three brigades charged in succession before us, and had been repulsed every time, we went in and was in there some fifteen minutes when we had to fall back as the others did. I will here mention the strength of Co. G at the time, twenty-six men all told and in that fifteen minutes lost in killed and wounded:
Lieut. A. G. Simons, commanding Co., of Antioch, killed.
Sergt. G. Tuweker, Kankakee, killed.
Corp. E. J. Depuy, Waukegan, killed.
Private R. Liutleff, Kankakee, killed.
Thomas Chambers, Waukegan, killed.
Sergt. Burr Akley, of Forksville (now Volo), killed.
WOUNDED.
Sergt. C. F. Bliss. of Fremont Centre, slight iu the head and jaw.
Private Fred Gruble, Fremont, slight in the arm.
E. B. Gorham, Fremont, slight in the forehead.
Peter Nolan, Waukegan, slight in though.
James Grimes, " "
Thomas Drury, Goodale band in ancle.
William Burnett, Wauconda, left side.
Wm. Carson, Chicago, arm broken.
Wm. Duggan, Chicago, in the thigh.
Wm. Culby, Kenkakee, in arm.
Elias B. Sanford, wounded.
Jacob Schnetz, missing.
SUNDAY the 20th.
Sergt. D. B. Ackley, of Forksville, and was one of the color bearers, the flag that he carried was shot clear from the staff on the 19th. and yet he came out unhurt till the next day, when he was instantly killed.

P. S, Since the above was written I have heard from the Co. Sergt. that T. J. Ames, of Fremont, is wounded and taken prisoner."
