---Mrs. W.L. Bates, a life-long resident of this city, died suddenly at her home about 7:30 last night from a heart attack. She had been in failing health for some time but was feeling as well as usual and about her household chores. she had eaten her supper and walked from the kitchen to a chair when she called to her husband that she felt so sick. She died before a physician could reach the house.
---Cora Cooley, wife of William L. Bates, born in Litchfield, Illinois, July 29, 1875, a daughter of Charles and Lucy Cooley, died February 3, 1937. She came to Missouri with her parents to the New Harmony Community east of La Plata where the family resided until about 1889. From there they moved to La Plata.
---She united in marriage to William L. Bates May 2, 1895. To them two children were born, a son and a daughter, Charles W. Bates and Julia May, wife of A.W. Royar, manager of the Marceline Lumber Company, Marceline. The son, Charles, preceded her in death March 30, 1932.
---Mrs. Bates was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church and a member of the Royal Neighbor Lodge.
---Deceased is survived by her husband, son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Royar, one grandson, Robert Royar, a brother, Edward Cooley, living on a farm near Kirksville, three nieces, Miss Cora Beall of Kansas City, Mrs. Charles Thompson of Plattsburg and Mrs. Floyd Stokes of Kirksville. Mrs. Stokes was formerly Thelma Cooley and made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Bates until her marriage. Herman and Ralph Griffith of Winfield, Kansas are great nephews. She also has other relatives and friends to mourn her death.
---Funeral services will be held at the D.S. Christie Funeral Home tomorrow afternoon, February 5, at 5:00, conducted by Rev. Fred L. Hudson, pastor of the Community Presbyterian Church. Burial will be made in the La Plata cemetery.
