Mary was the fourth of seven children born to George Philipp Gutmann and Katharina Louise Wenzel. Along with her parents and siblings she immigrated to the US in 1884 on board the passenger ship Westphalia. On 2 Oct 1897 she married John Wahler and they had seven children: Hudson, Catherine, Louise, Margaret, Lydia, Ruth and Lenora. She died of bronchopneumonia and lymphatic cancer at her home, 2221 W. Oak Street, at the age of 72.
