In 1841, Alson and Catherine married in Ohio. In addition to the children linked below, Alson's and Catherine's first two children were Hannah (who was born in Ohio and lived approximately one year) and Corbin (who died at approximately six months of age). Both were buried in Ohio (likely in Lorain county, in the vicinity of Vermillion). The family moved to Illinois, where James Edwin was born, and then to Columbia county, Wisconsin, where Mary was born. The family returned briefly to Ohio, where Justie was born, and then returned to Wisconsin, where Warren and Henry were born. In about 1867, the family moved to Nebraska.

Catherine was born in England. Her father died when she was too young to remember him. Her mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Baker. Following the death of her father, Catherine's mother remarried. Catherine, her mother and her stepfather, Mr. Burton, immigrated to America when Catherine was approximately 11 years old.
