James Adams, Sr. died at his home on Pleasant Run, on Tuesday November 8, 1881, at the house of 10 o'clock p.m. He was interred at St. John Chrysotom's [now St. Ivo's] Church, on his farm.

Services by Rev. P. DeFraine, who delivered a very impressive sermon on the occasion. The orator held up Mr. Adams as a bright example set before his numerous posterity as he was all his life of deep religious feeling, well read in the doctrine of the church and a staunch and uncompromising Catholic.

Mr. Adams was born in Maryland on August 25, 1802. He came to this county in 1817. In 1826, he married Miss Pamela Hill. She bore him 12 children, 11 of whom survived him. In 1847, he married Mrs. Rebecca Hocker, sister of his first wife, both sisters of Hon. C. S. Hill. His 2nd wife left one child, Pamela McIntire. In 1856, he married Mrs. Elizabeth Clark, who survives him. He lived to see 11 of his children married and 1 a Catholic priest.

Around his deathbed were 10 of the children and Mrs. R. Y. McElroy and W. H. Hocker, children of his 2nd wife. His children, by his request, burnt over him the remains of a blessed candle that burnt over his grandmother, his mother and father, John and Ann Adams and other members of the family. It has been in the family for more than one hundred years.

He lived 79 years, had 79 grandchildren living and 19 dead. Two of the 79 grandchildren are married, namely Joe Adams and Pamela Brown, the wife of ______ of Calvary.

Mr. Adams owned a Bible more than 100 years old and a pair of tablespoons that belonged to his grandfather, also over a century old. -- The Lebanon Standard, 11/16/1881
